The Mid-Atlantic Chapter RCI educational seminar for October 26, 2017 is quickly approaching. As always it should prove to be a stimulating and informative gathering. Six (6) RCI, Inc. Continuing Education Hours available.

Dealing With the Challenges of Mid-Rise Wood Frame Construction

Presenter: John Wylie- Construction Science and Engineering Inc.

This presentation will explain the code changes that allowed taller buildings to be constructed using wood. Additionally, attendees will learn about the characteristics of wood framing that present unique design challenges, the variety of building code issues that serve to reduce the durability of wood-frame buildings, and compatibility issues associated with various construction materials. Finally, the lack of proper (and misguided) communication between construction team members will be discussed in an effort to refocus on delivering a good building product and less on budgets, schedules and warranties.

How to Design Roofs That Allow Electronic Leak Detection Testing

Presenter: Dave Honza- President, Honza Group Inc.

This presentation will explain the fundamental principal for electronic leak detection (ELD) and how ELD works. ASTM D7877 and various ELD methods, including low and high voltage, will be reviewed along with factors that impact detecting and locating breaches such as lightning arrestor systems, base flashing heights, and vapor retarder / non-conductive decks. There will also be insights on roof design and construction related to ELD: new uses as vegetated and solar platforms, living spaces, and damage to membranes as a result of being a storage and work platform.

Primary and Overflow Roof Drain Detailing in Code Compliant Low Slope Roof Assemblies

Presenter: James Doughtery – Roof Consulting Services Inc.

The learning objectives the presentation will provide include:

  • Choosing the right roof drain components and roof details for the project.
  • How project conditions relating to the structure, such as deck type, slope and / or temporary roofing figure into the design
  • Coordination of the trades during construction.
  • Why the assembly is important to the success of the roof assembly.

Polyisocyanurate Continuous Insulation for Code-Compliant Walls in Type I-IV Construction

Presenter:  Tom Robertson – Atlas Wall CI Division

As building codes evolve, continuous rigid foam insulation has become a topic of intense interest in multiple arenas, including building science, health and safety and energy performance.  This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of the application of rigid foam continuous insulation. The presentation will instruct attendees in five topic areas; continuous insulation, thermal bridging, types of rigid foam insulation, energy code compliance and building code fire performance criteria for Types I-IV Construction. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of rigid foam insulation and its properties, applications and energy and building code requirements when used as exterior continuous insulation.
