The IIBEC Mid-Atlantic Chapter educational seminar scheduled for June 27, 2019 is quickly approaching. As always it should prove to be a stimulating and informative gathering.

1.       THE CAVITY WALL BALANCING ACT

Presenter: Todd Skopic, CDT, LEED AP - Building Science Manager - Henry Company

The use of open-joint rainscreen exterior walls, coupled with unconventional wall orientations, can be appealing, but can be a dangerous combination when abating water ingress and complying with building codes, including those related to combustibility.  Balancing the need to keep the building dry, airtight, thermally efficient, and code-compliant can create a cavity wall conundrum.  This session examines rainscreen wall design and standards for managing water in the context of the code also requiring continuous insulation, air barriers, and water-resistive barriers, as well as including life safety provisions related to combustibility.

2.      ADDRESSING WATERPROOFING, DRAINAGE, AND MAINTAINABILITY COMPLEXITITIES OF AMENITY ROOFTOPS

Presenter: Thomas F. Chmill – Senior Staff 1, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.

Rooftop amenity spaces have become common selling points in the design of new and repositioned multifamily, office, and hotel buildings in competitive real estate markets.  Amenities can provide entertainment and functionality to a roof space for building occupants and value to owners in the form of premium lease rates.  These amenities, however, carry inherent waterproofing and associated drainage complexities that significantly exceed those encountered in conventional low-slope roofing design and construction.  This presentation highlights critical design and coordination opportunities for the building envelope professional to employ and help project teams avoid performance pitfalls and unintended maintenance challenges associated with amenity roof features.

3.      OVERCOMING UNIQUE CHALLENGES WITH BLIND-SIDE BELOW-GRADE WATERPROOFING

Presenter: Brian Baker - Principal, Preservation & Protection Systems Inc.

Successful blind-side below-grade waterproofing is particularly challenging to effectively implement.  The quality of original installation is highly critical - once the foundation wall is placed, membrane repair is impractical if not impossible.  At the same time, the complexities of many shoring systems employed to support excavations often challenge the substrate conditions and detailing required for installation success.  This presentation focuses on real world experiences and solutions that have been used to overcome these challenges.

4.        ROOFTOP FALL PROTECTION - WHAT THE BUILDING ENVELOPE CONSULTANT NEEDS TO KNOW

Presenter:  John N. Karras - Senior Project Manager, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.

Fall protection in the context of rooftops is a subject matter that is relevant to many building envelope and roofing professionals, both from the standpoint of maintaining occupational safety for themselves and their employees, and from the standpoint of informing their roofing consulting services.  Mr. Karras will draw from his unique combination of building envelope consulting and safety training expertise to educate the attendees on long-standing fall protection regulations as well as recently modified fall protection regulations warranting the attention of all whose livelihood relates to a rooftop environment.
